Professional Profile
Educational Details
Dr. Abera earned his Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from Trento University, Italy (2012–2016), where his research focused on basin-scale water budget modeling using the JGrass-NewAge system. He holds a dual MSc (cum laude) through the EU Erasmus Mundus program—one in Environmental Forestry from Bangor University, UK, and another in Watershed Management from Padova University, Italy. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Geography and Environmental Studies (Very Great Distinction) from Mekelle University, Ethiopia, in 2006, where he explored mountain vegetation zonation for his senior research.
Professional Experience
Dr. Abera currently holds dual roles as Country Representative and Senior Scientist at the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, leading regional programs in Ghana and West Africa since 2023. Prior to this, he served as Scientist (2021–2023), Postdoctoral Fellow (2019–2021), and Technical Advisor (2017–2019) with CIAT, focusing on socio-ecological modeling, land-water management strategies, and climate resilience. He has also held academic positions, including Assistant Professor and Department Head at Mekelle University, Ethiopia, and Postdoctoral Researcher at Trento University, Italy. His professional journey spans project leadership, institutional collaboration, stakeholder engagement, and mentoring of graduate students.
Research Interests
Dr. Abera’s research interests are wide-ranging and interdisciplinary, including soil and water resource management, ecohydrology, hydrogeomorphology, landscape and ecosystem service modeling, and environmental computing. He is deeply engaged in applications of big data analytics, artificial intelligence, crop modeling, and remote sensing to support precision agriculture and sustainable land-use practices. His work also explores the integration of open-source GIS platforms for real-time environmental assessment and decision support.
Awards and Honors
Dr. Abera is a recipient of several prestigious accolades, including the 2020 One Planet Fellowship Laureate candidacy for early-career researchers in climate-resilient agriculture. He was awarded a full PhD scholarship by Trento University in 2012 and graduated with honors (110 cum laude) during his Erasmus Mundus MSc. He received the Erasmus Mundus scholarship in 2007 and was recognized with Very Great Distinction in his undergraduate studies at Mekelle University in 2006.
